Reporting to the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), Director, Information Security Engineering (DISE) is a leadership role at Illumina. This position requires experience, knowledge and skills in the areas of engineering, architecture, strategy and design. The individual will also be responsible for technical tool selection, leading the development and implementation of robust global, enterprise wide technical and operational control framework.

As a people leader, the Director will lead a team of engineers to deliver architecture and engineering strategies that take the IS program to the next level and align with business and technical strategic direction of the company. Further, this individual will ensure strategies are translated to plans for the engineering team and as needed more broadly across the enterprise to share and engage stakeholder communities. This role requires the ability to convey big picture complex technical ideas and solutions for the Engineering program as well tactical knowledge to support detailed issue resolution efforts for various security disciplines. This Director will must also effectively collaborate with numerous internal and external business partners and serve as a change agent for security engineering.


  • Knowledgeable, and to be established as one of the leading company experts on security protections and safeguards for company information assets
  • Document and deliver IS architectural and engineering strategies and roadmaps
  • Effectively engage and communicate IS Engineering program guidance to stakeholders at all levels
  • Lead IS technical design activities
  • Understanding of security threats. Risk identification for systems, infrastructure and data. Risk based planning, prioritization and participation in broader risk management efforts
  • Define technical control requirements, smartly evaluate and propose solutions that enhance the company’s security posture
  • Research, analyze, select, engineer and lead the test & implementation of security tools and services used to support the Security Operations, IT, Development Operations, Data Governance, customer support teams, legal, privacy and others
  • People leader for a team of IS Engineers with global span of responsibility. Ensure the team is focused on strategic objectives, a prioritized set of aligned goals and professional development
  • Lead the team to mitigate risk by delivering solutions and providing expertise, guidance and consultation on key IS disciplines for access controls, infrastructure, network, cloud, application development, cryptographic, data, end user computing and others
  • Lead the team to define and develop key IS standards for critical technologies especially across infrastructure, network, application and data that promote the adoption and use of solutions, practices and procedures that comply with internal policies and align with industry best practices


  • Minimum 7 years of information security engineering experience with track record of creating enterprise wide scalable solutions based on industry standard security concepts, technical controls and best practice frameworks
  • Minimum 5 years security architecture including experience identifying technical and procedural gaps across security focused solutions and processes
  • Minimum 7 years as people leader of technical team, preferably security engineering
  • Ability to proactively collaborate by sharing information, managing knowledge across many diverse teams to obtain input and feedback resulting in broad adopt solutions that improve security posture
  • Project management skills, sense of ownership and ability to lead and define clear actions for the team and broader stakeholders that results in the accomplishment of shared goals across the organization
  • Creates opportunities to improve technical capabilities and processes and leads innovation and security risk mitigation across the team and company
  • Effective communicator delivering key messages that leads team, engage business partners and inform stakeholders using informative clear verbal and written communications
  • Professional qualifications are preferred: CISSP, or SANS GIAC


Bachelor degree in computer science, engineering or similar and relevant work experience
