General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) designs and manufactures first-of-a-kind electromagnetic and electric power generation systems. GA-EMS' expanding portfolio of specialized products and integrated system solutions support critical fleet, space systems and satellites, missile defense, power and energy, and process and monitoring applications for defense, industrial, and commercial customers worldwide.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer to join the General Atomics EMS Engineering team in Rancho Bernardo, CA, supporting our Aircraft Launch and Recovery Equipment programs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works in a multi-disciplinary group with other Mechanical Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Control Engineers, Software Engineers, Quality Engineers, Logisticians, and Manufacturing Engineers to research, sustain engineering products, create new product designs, and prototype hardware for internal and external customers.
  • Performs failure analysis, trade studies, often in an environment where requirements may change, and cost and schedule pressures dictate an efficient approach.
  • Performs structural design, materials selection, utilize appropriate selection and application of stress criteria.
  • Writes technical reports, generate process documentation, participates in vendor selection, and may provide manufacturing and vendor oversight.
  • Provides direction to manufacturing, test, quality, logisticians, subcontracts, or technician staff.
  • Assists in the coordination of all engineering activities between Design/sustainment Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality Assurance, Procurement, Program Office, Material Planning, Configuration Management, Vendor and Customer stakeholders.
  • Reviews technical documentation, document findings and implement solutions. Communicate results to Engineering and Leadership staff.
  • Advises Management, Engineering and Program Office staff of work-in-progress status, material availability and potential design or production problems to ensure that personnel, equipment, materials, and services are provided as needed.
  • Works with Manufacturing Engineering and Project Management to resolve any design related issue impacting production and to improve product design.
  • Provide non-competitive procurement and technical evaluations to support procurement decisions.
  • Investigate and resolve first article and factory acceptance test issues to support the production schedule.
  • Mentors junior level engineers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications

  • Typically requires a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; six or more years of experience with a bachelor’s degree, four or more years of experience with a master’s degree, or two or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  • Experience working on projects from concept generation through real-world use.
  • Experience in space or nuclear programs is desirable.
  • EIT (Engineer in Training) certificate or PE (Professional Engineer) license is desirable.
Core Engineering Skills
  • Strong understanding of engineering concepts, principles, and theory, with demonstrated application in a safety- and compliance-focused environment.
  • Machine design experience is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and conduct tests and analyze test data.
  • Ability to integrate electronic components into mechanical designs (instrumentation, sensors, motors, controllers, etc.) is a plus.
  • Experience with various manufacturing processes and design for manufacturing (milling, turning, sheet metal, welding, additive technologies, etc.) is a plus.
CAD, Analysis & Tools
  • Proficiency in a 3D CAD system such as SolidWorks or CREO (or equivalent) is required.
  • Understanding of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) is required.
  • Familiarity with ANSYS or similar analysis tools is desirable.
  • Experience with data acquisition tools (e.g., LabVIEW) and data analysis tools (e.g., MATLAB) is a plus.
  • Proficiency with MS Office is required.
  • Experience with Windchill is a plus.
  • Experience with SAP is a plus.
Hands-On & Test Experience
  • Demonstrated hands-on skills working with hardware, including building prototypes, assembling test rigs, and analyzing failures.
  • Strong understanding of test data and associated data analysis.
Project & Work Management
  • Ability to organize, schedule, and coordinate workloads to meet established milestones and budgets.
  • Ability to organize work assignments to meet established timetables in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
  • Self-starter, able to work independently or in a team environment.
