We have an exciting opportunity for a Safety Engineer to join our Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S) Team in San Diego (Torrey Pines), CA.

Under general supervision, this position is responsible for providing safety engineering support through the identification and appraisal of loss-producing conditions and practices. Participates in the development of safe work and EH&S procedures training. Ensures workplace conditions comply with applicable Federal and State Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standard provisions, ensures that all required records are prepared and maintained; coordinates and participates in OSHA or other outside agency inspection(s), and in any processes that may follow a citation. May be responsible for remote facilities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Identifies and analyzes accidental loss workplace conditions; independently conducts safety investigations and recommends corrective actions where occupational hazards exist.
  • Participates in the development of safety training. Tailors training for individual departments and work areas that includes, but is not limited to: ergonomics, hazardous materials, right-to-know, material handling, CPR/First Aid, AED, Personal Protection Equipment and Emergency Procedures.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of corporate Employee Health and Safety programs; maintains safety manuals and documentation.
  • Participates in any regulatory inspections; investigates, develops, and forwards reports following incidents and injuries; completes required federal and state reports relating to safety.
  • Ensures compliance with government and state health and safety regulations that meets both budgetary and compliance requirements.
  • May be responsible for remote facilities; Ensures that all company sites adhere to safety policies and procedures; coordinates EH&S programs with representatives at remote sites.
  • Responsible for observing all laws, regulations and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company.
  • Expected to maintain a productive and safe working environment in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.
  • Additional Functions - other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a Bachelors or Masters degree in industrial hygiene, occupational safety or a related technical field and five or more years progressively complex experience with a Bachelors or three or more years progressively complex experience with a Masters, in safety engineering. Additional professional experience may be substituted in lieu of education.
  • Must demonstrate a general understanding of industrial hygiene and/or occupational safety principles, concepts, theories, regulations, and practices; and analytical skills to evaluate and interpret regulatory requirements.
  • The ability to resolve non-routine technical problems.
  • Strong verbal, written communication and computer skills to accurately document, report and present findings, and strong presentation skills to conduct training for all levels of employees.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively interface with all levels of employees, senior management, and outside representatives.
  • The ability to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • The ability to work independently, and collaboratively in a team environment is essential; as is the ability to work extended hours and travel as required.
